What's the difference between hydrocodone and propoxyphene? I have taken both medicines and found that propoxyphene doesn't work as fast or strong, why?

arg0574 replied: "You actually answered your own question. Hydrocodone is much more potent than propoxyphene. In fact, studies have shown that propoxyphene doesn't work any better than regular tylenol (acetaminophen). Additionally, propoxyphene is converted into an active metabolite in the body and can accumulate in people who have problems with their kidneys, causing toxic effects. Most products that contain hydrocodone also contain acetaminophen (tylenol), so be careful not to exceed 4000 mg of acetaminophen in a 24 hour period, since this can cause major liver damage. If you're taking other pain medications, make sure to check the labels to keep track of how much acetaminophen you're taking throughout the day."

sandy d replied: "I can answer only part of your question. PPROPOXPHENE is a brand name of Darvon, Darvon compound has aspirin & caffeine. Caffeine will make any medication work faster. The best place to go to look up any RX drugs is or you can use the mayoclinic site also."

Mandy VZ replied: "Propoxyphene (brand names Darvon, Darvocet, and Wygesic) is what doctors give to patients when they don't really want to give them a narcotic, or if the patient needs a narcotic but is afraid of iatrogenic addiction (addiction from taking a medication for a real medical purpose). It's really not that much stronger than Tylenol. Hydrocodone is one of the weaker narcotics (comparatively speaking, for me-- I take Oxycontin and OxyFast) but is quite a bit stronger than Darvocet. It is quite effective for moderate pain."

How long does it take propoxyphene (darvocet) to leave the system for a drug test? I had surgery a few months ago, and occasionally I have pain that I need a darvocet for. I took one on Wednesday and now I have a 10 panel drug screen on friday that can show propoxyphene. I just wondered how long it will take for the medication to leave my system.

razerback22 replied: "like the other person said from 20- 30 days but also in the hair folicle certain drugs can stay to up to 3-4 years like marijuana and such but propoxyphene if its just for medical issues shouldnt be a problem if you let them know and if it isnt a lot of times job recruits will check internet sites like these to see if your sneaking anything but anyways.."

How much do propoxyphene go for? I was just wondering how much propoxyphene goes for "on the streets." Just got a lot of them. I believe they are the generic darvoset to. Thank you!

how long do you have to wait to take Tylenol if you already took Propoxyphene? i heard that it is dangerous to take Propoxyphene and Tylenol at the same time. andi just want to know how long you have to wait if you took Propoxyphene.

Do not take codeine with other narcotic pain medications, sedatives, tranquilizers, muscle relaxers, or other medicines that can make you sleepy or slow your breathing. Dangerous side effects may result. Before taking tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs: * antidepressants; * a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin); or * seizure medication such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol). This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with propoxyphene. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor. What are the effects of combining propoxyphene and Hydrocodone? Does it help alleviate the pain a little more or does it just make you get high? Can these be take with clonazepam?

Nate A replied: "I wouldn't take them together. They are both narcotics but have two different chemical makeups. I doubt major issues would arise but if you aren't use to taking pain medicine you are probably going to get really sick"

Is D-Propoxyphene Napsylate stronger or weaker than codein? How much mg of codein will 2 tabllets be? One tablet contains 50 mg Propoxyphene.

It's prescribed in two forms -- propoxyphene hydrochloride and propoxyphene napsylate -- for relief of mild to moderate pain. Aside from slight differences -- the napsylate (or N-form) of propoxyphene is more slowly absorbed in the body and so has a longer duration of action -- the two drugs are identical. Both are found in a number of prescription pain medications, including: * Darvon and Darvon-N (propoxyphene only)\ * Darvon with A.S.A., Darvon-N with A.S.A. (with aspirin) * Darvocet, Darvocet-N, Wygesic (with acetaminophen) * Darvon Compound, Darvon Compound-65 (with aspirin and caffeine) But in whatever form, propoxyphene is prescribed and sold as a mild analgesic for pain that won't stop with aspirin."

Tested positive for propoxyphene after taking mothers darvocet by mistake instead of my own hydocodone,options? This happened as part of a pre-employment drug screen. I have just moved back home with parent and am sharing a medicine cabinet. Can I ask to be retested?

Like if you were supposed to be taking darvocet and accidentally took the vicodin. i think if you explain its not a big deal. just talk to them and see if they will retest you. vicodin is a much stronger drug then darvocet."

If I take a propoxyphene - N pill, will I start tripping out and die? Or will I just get a weaker hydroxycodone(lortab) high and be fine?

B-Rabbit replied: "The contraindications for propoxyphene says avoid chronic use if pregnant or lactating...so it sounds like if you stopped taking it there shouldn't be any long term effects, let your doctor know, but there isn't alot he can do after the fact.
